Images For Web
So we’ve heard all about optimizing images online if you look back at just a few of our previous blogs it is something that we’ve seen a need for, and most of these are free source online image optimizing and editing websites, and these are all great! Really! But no doubt it does pose one or two issues, mainly in the matter of convenience; you need to always be connected to the web, and need to have a reasonably fast connection so as you don’t end up red faced due to the pace of you images uploading.
So we found it, a free source program that you can download onto your computer, much like Photoshop minus the flashy price tag. It goes by the name of Gimp.
I know, I know, but name aside GIMP, or GNM Image Manipulation Program is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
It has loads of capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image rendered, an image format converter, etc.. sounds fancy right?
GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.
One of the most common uses for GIMP, is to prepare images for web sites. This means that images should look as nice as possible while keeping the file size as small as possible. This step-by-step guide demonstrates how to create small files with minimal loss of image quality, as mentioned in our previous blogs.
